In 1792, the national anthem of France, “La Marseillaise,” was composed by Capt. Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle.
In 1898, Spain declared war on the United States after rejecting America’s ultimatum to withdraw from Cuba.
In 1915, the Ottoman Turkish Empire began the brutal mass deportation of Armenians during World War I.
In 1916, some 1,600 Irish nationalists launched the Easter Rising by seizing several key sites in Dublin. (The uprising was put down by British forces several days later.)
In 1953, British statesman Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1968, leftist students at Columbia University in New York began a week-long occupation of several campus buildings.

Five years ago: The main assembly of the Palestine Liberation Organization voted to revoke clauses in its charter that called for an armed struggle to destroy Israel. Negotiators for Congress and the White House agreed on a permanent budget for fiscal year 1996.
One year ago: Concerned about the disappearance of a laptop computer with highly sensitive documents, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright announced a five-point plan to help guard against such lapses in the future. A teen-age gunman opened fire at Washington’s National Zoo, wounding seven children.

1961, Bob Dylan made his recording debut playing harmonic on Harry Belafonte’s album ‘The Midnight Special’, he was paid a $50 session fee.
1961, Del Shannon started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Runaway’, also a No.1 in the UK. Del was the first person to have a hit with a Beatles song in the US with his version of ‘From Me To You’.
1965, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Game Of Love’. Wayne took his name from Elvis’ drummer DJ Fontana, guitarist in the Mindbenders Eric Stewart went on form Hotlegs and 10CC.
1968 Apple Records turned down an offer to sign new artist David Bowie.
1968, Louis Armstrong was at No.1 in the UK with the single ‘What A Wonderful World / Cabaret’.
1971, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young went to No.1 on the US album chart with ‘4 Way Street’.
1976, Led Zeppelin had their sixth No.1 UK album when ‘Presence’ went to the top. Also No.1 in the US.
1976, ‘Wings At The Speed Of Sound’ went to No.1 on the US album chart. Paul McCartney’s fifth No.1 after The Beatles.
1981, New Order started work on their first album at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England.
1982, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Ebony And Ivory’.
1982, Status Quo scored their fourth UK No.1 album with ‘1982’.
